5 Reasons Head Injuries Are Often More Dangerous for Older Workers

April 7, 2022 by James Hoffmann

Older workers are twice as likely as younger workers to die from a head injury, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

There are several reasons for this, which we’ll discuss below. As an older worker, it’s important to be aware of the dangers posed by head injuries and take steps to protect yourself from them.

5 Reasons Head Injuries Are Generally More Dangerous for Older Workers

As we age, our bones get weaker and more brittle. This is especially true of the skull, which can lose up to 20% of its strength by the time we reach 80 years old. This makes it much easier for the skull to be fractured or crushed in an accident, leading to severe brain damage.

Older people are also more likely to suffer from medical conditions that can make head injuries more dangerous. For example, high blood pressure and diabetes can lead to increased brain bleeding after an injury. And if you’re taking medication for these conditions, it may make it harder for your body to recover from a head injury.

Another factor that makes head injuries more dangerous for older people is that our brains tend to shrink as we age. This means there’s less space inside the skull for the brain to swell after an injury. Swelling of the brain is a major concern after a head injury and can often lead to long-term damage or even death.

Another reason why head injuries are more dangerous for older people is that we tend to take longer to recover from them. This is because the brain heals more slowly as we age. In addition, older people are more likely to have other health problems that can complicate their recovery from a head injury.

Finally, older people are more likely to suffer from dementia and other cognitive declines. This can make it difficult for them to recover from a head injury, even if the initial damage is not severe.

Tips to Prevent Head Injuries at Work

  • Always wear a properly fitting hard hat whenever you’re working. This is especially important if you’re working in an industry with a risk of falling objects or other head injuries.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert to potential hazards. This can help you avoid accidents that could lead to head injuries.

Important

If you do suffer a head injury, seek medical attention immediately. This is especially important if you experience any concussion symptoms, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting.
